Today Dave spoke to us about the process of creating a magazine/newspaper. Here are the notes I took:
Editor
|
Deputy Editor - Art Editor
|
Production Editor - Sections Editor - Section Editor
|
Staff Writers
Magazine Timeline:
Raw Copy - Sub Copy - To Art - From Art - To Caption - Final Check - To Send
|
In this process there is only ever one copy of the magazine in circulation.
General Notes:
Jobs:
Editors job to say 'yes' or 'no' and make final decisions. A good editor makes better decisions.
Art editor in charge of design of the magazine (takes ideas from editor).
Production Editor to make sure everyone is doing their job - can nag editor also.
Production Editor also makes sure flat plan* is filled.
Fashion Editor
Features Editor - In charge of that month etc.
Process:
*First have to make a 2D map of the papers design. (Flat Plan)
Front page - Most important. It has to catch the consumers eye.
(Our flat plan will be 12 pages)
Everything goes through the production editors several times.
Example of Process:
Staff Writers --> Production Editor --> Art Editor --> Production Editor --> Editor --> Production Editor --> Editor --> Send Off
Magazine Deadlines:
Flat Plan Deadline --> Copy Deadline (All writing done, etc.) --> Final Deadline (Check PDFs) --> Print Deadline (Double Checks)
Printing works will have a time slot for your paper. Missing this deadline will cost money.
